The incredible secret of the London Overground rebranding
I am 100% on-board with the London Overground being split into six different lines with individual names. It is infuriating to see there are delays on the Overground and have no clear idea of whether they might be on a completely disconnected part of the network on the other side of town from where you are trying to go.
Jonn Elledge recently interviewed Jon Hunter, Transport for London’s head of design, about the process, and revealed an amazing fact – that they’ve nearly already replaced all of the signage on the network with the new line names and brand colours, and nobody has noticed!
The secret? It is all covered up with stickers that have the existing orange branding on them, which will get all ripped off overnight, making it look like every sign has been changed in one fell swoop.
This sign at Blackhorse Road, for example, is ready to have its roundel ripped off to reveal its true Suffragette line colours.
You can also make out on this sign at Walthamstow Central that when the top layer is peeled off, it will read “Weaver line to Chingford”.
There are plenty more interesting nuggets in Elledge’s two-part interview with Hunter: “All change on the Overground” and “So is someone gonna fix the Tube Map or what?”.
